Is masturbation permissible in Islam?

Masturbation is forbidden by Islamic law, as indicated by both the Quran and the Sunnah. Al-Shafi'i interpreted the verses of Surat Al-Mu'minun to prohibit anything other than wives and what one's right hand possesses. The verse "And let those who find not [the means for] marriage abstain [from sexual relations]" is cited as evidence for the command of chastity. From the Sunnah, the hadith of Ibn Mas'ud guides young people who are unable to marry to fast instead of masturbating.

To address masturbation, one must obey Allah's command, marry if possible, and repel intrusive thoughts and temptations by occupying oneself with beneficial activities, lowering the gaze, avoiding stimulating environments, engaging in acts of worship, contemplating the health and psychological harms and the squandering of prayers and fasting, correcting erroneous beliefs, exercising strong will, and avoiding solitude. It is recommended to fast to curb sexual urges, and to be cautious of vows and medications that suppress desire. Adhering to the Islamic etiquettes of sleep, possessing patience and chastity, repenting and seeking forgiveness when falling into sin, and finally, resorting to Allah through supplication are also advised.
