Does eating pomegranates enlighten the heart and restrain Satan and temptation for forty days?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

No authentic Prophetic tradition (hadith marfu') has been established regarding the virtues of pomegranates. Rather, the traditions on this topic are weak (da'if) or fabricated (mawdu'). Among these are fabrications attributed by the Rafidi Shi'a to the Household (Ahl al-Bayt), such as Ja'far al-Sadiq and Ali al-Rida. Examples include: "Whoever eats a pomegranate on an empty stomach, it will illuminate his heart for forty days," and "Whoever eats a pomegranate until he finishes it, Allah will illuminate his heart for forty nights," and "There is no pomegranate except that it contains a seed from the pomegranates of Paradise." Imam al-Dhahabi mentioned that the fabricated traditions attributed to Ali al-Rida were invented by the misguided (al-dullal).
