What is the etiquette of eating in Islam?
Regarding food in Islamic Sharia, there are etiquette guidelines divided into categories:
Etiquette Before Eating: Washing hands: To ensure their cleanliness. Inquiring about the food: Especially if the guest does not know its type, as the Prophet (peace be upon him) did when offered a monitor lizard. Taking the initiative to eat: As a gesture of honor to the host and to reassure them. Mentioning Allah's name before eating: By saying "Bismillah" (In the name of Allah). If one forgets, they should say "Bismillah awwalahu wa akhirahu" (In the name of Allah, at its beginning and end).
Etiquette While Eating: Eating with the right hand: Unless there is an excuse, as the Prophet (peace be upon him) forbade eating with the left hand, for Satan eats with it. Eating from what is in front of you: Not from the middle of the food or what is in front of others, because blessings descend upon its middle, unless the food consists of different types. Eating with three fingers: Which is the Sunnah, and there is no harm in using a spoon. Eating a dropped morsel: After removing any dirt from it, so as not to leave it for Satan, and because blessings might be in it. Not reclining while eating: As the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "I do not eat while reclining." Not spitting or blowing one's nose: Unless out of necessity. General etiquette: Such as eating with a group, engaging in permissible conversation, eating with wives and children, and preferring others with the best of the food.
Etiquette After Finishing Food: Washing hands after food: Recommended. Rinsing the mouth after food: Recommended. Supplicating for the host. Praising Allah (the Exalted) after finishing food with the reported supplications from the Prophet (peace be upon him), such as: "Alhamdulillah hamdan kathiran tayyiban mubarakan fihi ghaira makfiyyin wa la muwadda'in wa la mustaghanan 'anhu rabbana" (All praise is due to Allah, much good and blessed praise, unceasing, not left behind, and not dispensed with, our Lord), or "Alhamdulillah alladhi at'amani hadha wa razaqanihi min ghairi hawlin minni wa la quwwah" (All praise is due to Allah, who fed me this and provided it to me without any strength or power from me), or "Alhamdulillah alladhi at'ama wa saqa wa sawwagahu wa ja'ala lahu makhrajan" (All praise is due to Allah, who fed and gave drink and made it easy to swallow and made an exit for it).
General Etiquette in Eating: Not criticizing food: As the Prophet (peace be upon him) used to do, unless it was unlawful. Moderation in food: By making a third for food, a third for drink, and a third for oneself, to avoid laziness. Avoiding eating and drinking from gold and silver vessels: Because it is prohibited.
