Is eating with the right hand Sunnah or Wajib?
Scholars have stated that eating with the right hand is a matter of etiquette, not an obligation. This is the view of the Hanafis, Malikis, Shafi'is, and Hanbalis. Ibn Hazm, Ibn Abd al-Barr, Taj al-Subki, and his father disagreed with this, citing hadiths such as: "Do not eat with your left hand, for Satan eats with his left hand," and "Eat with your right hand." The majority responded that the command to eat with the right hand is not for obligation but for etiquette, and that resembling Satan does not always imply prohibition, such as napping (qaylulah) or sitting in the shade and sun (majlis al-shaytan). Regarding the Prophet's (peace be upon him) supplication against the man who ate with his left hand, it was said that this man was a hypocrite, or that the supplication against him was for abandoning a legal ruling, or for his arrogance.
