What is the definition of the stinginess mentioned in the Prophet's (peace be upon him) saying: "The stingy one is he in whose presence I am mentioned and he does not send prayers upon me," and is it obligatory to send prayers upon him every time his name is mentioned, or is one time sufficient to remove the description of stinginess?

Praying upon the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, is among the best deeds and acts of worship. It is recommended whenever he is mentioned, even if repeated. In fact, some scholars, though a minority, have even said it is obligatory every time he is mentioned, which indicates its strong emphasis. Therefore, the more a servant prays upon him, the more beneficial it is for him. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Indeed, the closest of people to me on the Day of Resurrection are those who send the most prayers upon me." As for the hadith that describes one who does not pray upon him when he is mentioned as stingy, those who argue for the obligation of praying upon him have used it as proof, stating that stinginess is a blameworthy trait, and a stingy person is one who withholds what is obligatory. However, the majority responded that stinginess is not limited to abandoning obligations; it also applies to those who refrain from performing recommended acts. Thus, praying upon him is recommended, not obligatory, and one who abstains from it does not incur sin, but is described as stingy towards himself for abandoning a great reward for a small effort.
