Can a woman repent after betraying her husband and marrying her lover, and are her children and marriage considered lawful and valid?

The adulterers must repent by regretting their actions and resolving not to return to them, for sincere repentance transforms bad deeds into good ones. Adultery is a grave sin, and the punishment for a married person is stoning.

The children born from the first marriage are attributed to the husband, according to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him: "The child is for the [owner of the] bed, and for the adulterer is the stone." Paternity is not disproven except through li'an (oath of condemnation) and the denial of the child.

The second marriage is valid if it occurs after repentance; otherwise, there is a difference of opinion. The majority considers it valid, while the Hanbalis stipulate the repentance of the adulteress. Therefore, it is safer to renew the contract if she did not repent before the contract.
