Scholars have differed regarding which part of the khuff (leather sock) is permissible to wipe. Many of them held that the prescribed way is to wipe both its top and bottom, citing a weak as evidence. A group of scholars, however, maintained that the prescribed way is to wipe only the top of the khuff, which is the apparent meaning of the , based on the narration of Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to wipe over the top of his khuff. The Sunnah is to wipe both khuff just as one wipes the head. The manner of wiping is to pass one's hand from the tips of the toes up to the shin only. One should wipe the right foot with the right hand and the left foot with the left hand simultaneously.
