Scholars have differed regarding which part of the khuff (leather sock) is permissible to wipe. A group of scholars, however, maintained that the prescribed way is to wipe only the top of the khuff, which is the apparent meaning of the , based on the narration of Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to wipe over the top of his khuff.
