Is it permissible to profit from reserving domain names and then selling them to companies or individuals for large sums, whether these names are of famous personalities, books, future products, or general names like cities and animals?

It is permissible to sell domain names and trademarks and profit from them. The rulings on buying and selling them vary depending on their types. A distinction must be made between two types:

1. Regarding the names of famous personalities and international trademarks: Infringing upon them or reserving them to resell them to their original owners is considered usurpation of benefits and is not permissible according to Islamic law, because these are protected rights of their owners.

2. Regarding domain names or similar personal names that do not belong to a famous entity: These fall under the ruling of precedence in acquiring permissible things. It is permissible to resell them and profit from them.
