Is it permissible to marry while having financial obligations towards one's parents, and is it a sin to stop spending on one's mother while continuing to spend on one's father?
The Shari'ah encourages marriage and it is sunnah for one who is able to marry. It becomes obligatory for one who fears falling into adultery by refraining from it. This is due to numerous benefits, such as protecting one's chastity, procreating, and increasing the Muslim nation. One should hasten to marry and try to convince the mother. If she is not convinced, then proceed with the marriage and strive to please her, for obedience to parents is intended for their benefit, provided it does not harm the child. There is no obligation to financially assist her if her expenses are covered, but giving her money is an act of righteousness, and righteousness is broad, encompassing the delivery of all good and the repulsion of all evil. One should not aid a brother in idleness, but rather sharpen his resolve to work. Be patient with the harshness of siblings, and strive to mend family relations by seeking help from righteous people and making abundant supplications.
