Divorce was legislated to remedy intractable marital problems, and its ruling varies according to circumstances, oscillating between obligatory, reprehensible, and permissible. There is no harm in associating divorce—if it is not forbidden—with divine decree (qada') and destiny (qadar (definition)). Breaking off an engagement is permissible, but it is reprehensible without a reason, and not reprehensible with a reason. As for the injustice inflicted upon a person, it is by Allah’s decree and destiny, but the servant is responsible for his actions; good deeds are from Allah, and evil deeds are from the self. To safeguard the rights of the daughter, one must choose a suitor who possesses religiosity and good character, for he is the one who combines piety towards Allah and benevolence.
