How should one deal with someone who is a "mannan" (one who boasts of his good deeds and reminds others of them), while not being in need of him and not wanting to let down a Muslim or prevent a good deed?
The Al-Mannān (the one who reminds others of his favors) is he who does good and then reminds others of it. Reminding others of what one has given is forbidden and is a major sin.
To deal with the Al-Mannān: - Be patient with his harm, for the believer who mingles with people and is patient with their harm is better than one who does not mingle with them and is not patient with their harm. - Keep away from the favors of Al-Mannān to avoid his humiliation and harm. The encourages asceticism regarding what people possess, especially from Al-Mannān.
It was narrated from Ash-Shafi'i and some others poetic verses that warn against accepting the benevolence of Al-Mannān, describing men's reminding of favors as more severe on hearts than the thrust of spears, and asserting that the generous person is not one who reminds others of his favors.
