It is forbidden to read novels and stories that may affect a Muslim's faith, unless the reader is fortified with sufficient knowledge to repel doubts. As for mythical fictional stories that do not contain a call or message contradicting faith or values, such as a talking animal or imaginary creatures, there is no objection to reading them.
