Does a divorce take effect if the husband uttered the words of divorce multiple times based on his suspicion that his wife was cheating on him, and then it became clear to him that his suspicion was entirely wrong, knowing that the phrases he used were along the lines of "She is divorced," "She is no longer under my charge," "I have indeed divorced you, and if I had 100 divorces, I would divorce you with them," and "I call God to witness that she is not my wife"?

The preponderant opinion is that the aforementioned divorce does not take effect as long as the reason for which the divorce was pronounced has ceased to exist. Ibn al-Qayyim mentioned that the madhhab of Ahmad and his shaykh in this matter is that the divorce does not occur. The mere statement of divorce having occurred does not result in another divorce, and similarly, self-talk does not result in divorce at all. To rectify the injustice done to the wife, one must seek her forgiveness and ask for her pardon. It is advised to bring her back home and treat her kindly, to think well of her, and to beware of whisperings and completely disregard them.
