Abortion is (forbidden) in Islamic law and is not permissible except out of necessity. Work circumstances and debts are not considered necessities that permit it. If an abortion occurs after the formation of the fetus, diyah (blood money) is obligatory, which is a ghurrah (a male or female slave), and its value is one-tenth of the mother's diyah. This diyah is incumbent upon the person directly performing the abortion. Furthermore, according to some scholars, atonement for killing (kaffarat al-qatl) is also obligatory, which is the freeing of a slave; if one cannot find a slave, then fasting for two consecutive months.
