Which is more befitting: for a man to live with his wife in a foreign land, able to cover living expenses but unable to save for the future, or for them to separate?

It is preferable for a man living abroad to have his wife accompany him, as this helps both of them maintain chastity and achieve psychological stability. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, used to travel with one of his wives. Scholars have specified a period that a man should not exceed away from his wife without her consent. If he can bring her, that is best for both of them. If he cannot, then they should agree on a specific period; striving to accumulate wealth should not lead to prolonged separation, and the presence of his wife will not diminish sustenance. If they agree that their best interest requires a temporary separation to build a home, and there is no risk of falling into sin, then there is no harm in that.
