What is the ruling of the religion on the process of artificial insemination?

Allah Almighty has bestowed upon His servants the blessings of lineage and kinship through marriage, and the preservation of offspring is one of the objectives of Islamic law. For this reason, Allah has legislated marriage and forbidden adultery. The child is the fruit of a valid marriage, whereas a child born out of wedlock brings shame to his mother and grows up corrupt. In order to preserve lineages, the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, affirmed the rule: "The child belongs to the bed (i.e., the husband), and for the fornicator is the stone." Adoption has also been prohibited, and the waiting period (iddah) for a divorced woman has been legislated. As for artificial insemination, what is permissible is taking sperm from the husband and fertilizing the wife's egg, then returning it to her womb. What is forbidden is taking sperm from a man other than the husband or an egg from a woman other than the wife, or implanting the fertilized egg in the womb of another woman, due to the mixing of lineages that this entails.
