To what extent is the supplication "O Allah, cast Your hope into my heart, and sever my hope from all but You" authentic?

The aforementioned supplication has not been authentically attributed to the Prophet, peace be upon him. Rather, it was reported as a saying of Al-Hasan ibn Ali, may Allah be pleased with them both, with a chain of narration found in Tarikh Dimashq by Ibn Asakir, stating that Al-Hasan saw the Prophet, peace be upon him, in a dream, and he recited the aforementioned supplication to him. Ibn Asakir's history is known for narrating weak hadiths.

A long supplication, similar in some of its meanings to the one mentioned, was reported in Sunan al-Tirmidhi and Dala'il al-Nubuwwah by Abu Nu'aym, but its chain of narration is weak.

Nevertheless, there is no objection to supplicating with it, because the wordings of supplications are not restricted to specific texts, and many scholars permit acting upon weak narrations in matters of virtuous deeds.
