How can the Prophet's—peace and blessings be upon him—rising from the gathering after Abu Bakr's rebuttal of the man who insulted him be reconciled with the Hadith: "The two who revile each other are accountable for what they say, and the one who initiated it bears the burden, unless the wronged one transgresses"? And is the first Hadith authentic?

The two hadiths are reconciled by understanding that retaliation for oneself and responding to insults are permissible, but patience and forgiveness are more preferable and superior. This is clarified by the Almighty's saying: "And whoever avenges himself after being wronged—those have no cause for blame," and the Almighty's saying: "But whoever is patient and forgives—indeed, that is of the matters [requiring] determination," and the Almighty's saying: "And if you punish [an enemy], punish with an equivalent of that with which you were afflicted. But if you are patient—it is better for those who are patient."
