Is it permissible to wipe over two socks (one over the other) if one was put on over the other after wiping over the first, and is it permissible to wipe over a torn sock?

Scholars have agreed that wearing a sock over another sock after purification and wiping the first one does not nullify ablution. However, they differed on the permissibility of wiping the top sock. Many scholars favored the permissibility of wiping it because it was worn in a state of purity, whether that purity came from a full ablution (ghusl (definition)) or from wiping (masḥ). As for a torn sock, the prevalent opinion is that it is not permissible to wipe over it unless it covers the obligatory area. Some scholars, however, allowed wiping over it if its tear was not excessive, if it still maintained the designation of a sock, and if it was possible to walk in it.
