Is it permissible to keep gold-plated medals, and is Zakat due on them if the amount of gold on them is unknown?

It is permissible to keep the gold medals that women adorn themselves with. As for plated medals from which no gold separates when exposed to fire, it is permissible for both men and women to use them; otherwise, it is not. Manufacturing them initially is absolutely impermissible. Zakat (definition) is not obligatory on them unless the gold that separates from them reaches the nisab (definition) (minimum taxable amount) and a hawl (one lunar year) has passed on it. In estimating this, one should refer to experts.
