What should I do about my mother’s continuous harshness and injustice towards me and my sisters, which has negatively affected my psychological state?
It is generally expected that a mother feels compassion for her children. If a mother is harsh and mistreats her daughters, this is unusual, and the reasons for it should be sought out and addressed. It is advisable to be patient with her, supplicate for her guidance, and respond to her mistreatment with kindness, as this might soften her heart, as Allah Almighty says: {Nor can goodness and evil be equal. Repel (evil) with that which is better: then verily he, between whom and you there was enmity, (will become) as though he was a close friend.} [Al-Fussilat: 34]. Moreover, she should be advised with wisdom and good counsel by those who hold a respected position in her eyes. One must be careful not to commit disobedience towards her, no matter how much she mistreats. As for the father, he must exercise his guardianship over his household by upholding the limits set by Allah, as Allah Almighty says: {Men are guardians over women because Allah has made some of them to excel others and because they spend out of their property [for the support of women]}. He should be advised gently to rectify the situation of his household.
