What is the meaning of the Almighty's saying: "And eat and drink until the white thread becomes distinct to you from the black thread of the dawn"?

The noble verse: (Permitted for you on the night of the fast is sexual approach to your wives. They are clothing for you, and you are clothing for them. Allah knew that you were deceiving yourselves, so He accepted your repentance and pardoned you. So now, have sexual relations with them and seek what Allah has ordained for you, and eat and drink until the white thread of dawn becomes distinct to you from the black thread of night. Then complete the fast until the night) Al-Baqarah/187.

This verse clarifies that Allah permitted eating and drinking at night for the fasting person until the true dawn becomes evident. The "white thread" refers to the whiteness of daylight, and the "black thread" refers to the darkness of night. Some Companions initially misunderstood the verse, thinking it referred to a literal thread, until the phrase (of dawn) was revealed, clarifying the meaning for them. This happened to Adi ibn Hatim, whose understanding the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, corrected. Scholars excused Adi, saying that the language was not clear to him or that the clarification had not reached him. As for the Prophet's saying to Adi: (You are wide in the neck), scholars denied that it was a rebuke. Rather, it was an expression of astonishment at the large size of the pillow he imagined could encompass both night and day. It is inferred from the verse that it is permissible for someone who doubts the onset of dawn to eat and drink until certainty is achieved, based on the principle of "until it becomes distinct."
