Is it obligatory to refrain from playing or listening to other materials, such as listening to clips and anasheeds, and is it necessary to listen attentively, when the sound of the Holy Quran Radio is audible from an adjacent room?

It is agreed that one is only obligated to listen attentively to the Qur’an during prayer or the khutbah (definition) (sermon), based on the Almighty’s saying: {And when the Qur’an is recited, then listen to it and pay attention}, which the Companions and their successors interpreted as being specific to prayer, with some adding the khutbah. Consequently, there is no obligation to listen attentively to the Qur’an played by a colleague, and it is permissible to engage in other lawful matters, as long as this does not negatively affect work. If playing the Qur’an radio harms the work, then the colleague must turn it off.
