The answer

Scholars have differed on whether yellowish and brownish discharges are considered menses. If the blood continues to flow continuously or intermittently, then whatever the woman sees of yellowish discharge, black blood, or light brown blood is considered menses.

A woman observes her customary maximum period. If the bleeding does not stop, she adds three days (istizhar). Then she performs ghusl (ritual bath) and prays, provided that the total period does not exceed fifteen days.

If the blood returns before the completion of fifteen days, it is added to what preceded it. If her customary period has not been completed, it is completed from the new blood. If it has been completed, then the blood that appears before the completion of purity is considered irregular bleeding (istihada).

If the custom reaches eleven days, and she adds three days (istizhar), the total becomes fourteen days, during which she abstains from prayer. If the blood returns to her before the completion of her custom and before the completion of purity, it is added to the previous menses. She performs ghusl and begins to pray, and she does not pay attention to the flowing blood until after the completion of fifteen days. If thereafter a clear distinction in the blood appears, she considers it menses (and abstains from prayer). This is the well-known position in the Maliki school.
