What is the ruling on authorizing a woman to divorce herself, and what is the text of such authorization and divorce? And can she divorce herself with three pronouncements?

A man may delegate to his wife the authority to divorce herself. The wife retains this delegated authority as long as she remains in the same مجلس (gathering/session). The Hanbalis, however, hold that it remains valid even after the مجلس.

If the wife is delegated the authority to divorce herself with the words "اختاري نفسك" (choose yourself), she is granted a single revocable divorce, unless the husband adds to it. However, if he says "أمرك بيدك" (your affair is in your hand), she may divorce herself three times.

It is not permissible for the husband to delegate to his wife the authority to divorce herself three times, because this is an unlawful bid'i (innovative) divorce. If she divorces herself three times (in this manner), only one divorce takes effect.

The delegation of divorce authority is invalidated by sexual intercourse, or by the wife rejecting the delegation, or by the husband retracting it. Efforts should be made towards reconciliation, and the request for divorce should not be readily acceded to.
