How can I be a pious, forgiving servant [of God]?

Piety is to obey Allah based on light from Him, hoping for His reward, and to abandon disobedience to Him based on light from Him, fearing His punishment. It is Allah's injunction to the ancients and the moderns. As for tolerance, it is to give what is not obligatory out of grace, and it involves patience and leniency. It means facilitation, gentleness, waiving of rights, benevolence to others, and overlooking mistakes.
