What are the parameters of abandonment (hajr), who are those who advocate for it, what are the conditions that must be met by them, and to whom do we refer for clarification of this issue, given the proliferation of abandonment, those who abandon, and those who are abandoned?

Love for the sake of Allah is a perfection of faith. Shunning people of disobedience and innovation is legislated for the benefit of both the one who shuns and the one who is shunned. It is of two types: first, abandoning evil deeds; and second, shunning disobedient people as a form of discipline. Legitimate shunning is intended to deter and discipline the shunned person, though sometimes conciliation may be more beneficial than shunning. Shunning people of disobedience is a fundamental principle in religion, but it must be for the sake of Allah, not out of personal caprice. It is not permissible for a Muslim to shun his brother for more than three nights if the shunning is for personal reasons, because it severs the bonds of brotherhood.
