What must I do concerning my colleague after taking a broken measuring device from him without his knowledge, then one of my relatives took the device from me with the intention of fixing it but did not, knowing that I am too shy to tell him, and is it permissible for me to donate its value in charity, knowing that it is broken and cheap?
It is obligatory to return the device to its owner by any suitable means, even without his knowledge, because the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "The wealth of a Muslim is not lawful except with his willing consent," and he also said: "The hand is responsible for what it takes until it returns it."
