Is the story of Uqbah ibn Nafi's call to the animals to leave the forest for the building of Kairouan authentic?

The circulating report about 'Uqbah ibn Nafi' ordering the predators and snakes to leave the valley of Kairouan before Muslims settled it, and their subsequent departure, is a well-known account in history books. It has been narrated with multiple chains of transmission (asanid), some of which are weak, such as the chains of Al-Waqidi and Furat ibn Muhammad, due to the weakness of their narrators. The soundest of these narrations in terms of its chain of transmission is the narration of Khalifah ibn Khayyat from Yahya ibn Abd al-Rahman ibn Hatib, whose chain was deemed hasan (good) by Al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar, because its narrators are trustworthy. Although there is some discussion concerning one of them (Muhammad ibn Amr ibn Alqamah), he is among the narrators from whom Al-Shaykhan (Al-Bukhari and Muslim) transmitted.
