What are the characteristics of the preacher (khatib) and the muezzin, and who is more entitled to these roles?

The muezzin must possess certain characteristics, some of which are conditions and some are desirable. The conditions are: being a male, Muslim, and sane. Some jurists also stipulate justice. It is sunnah (definition) for him to have a loud voice, be trustworthy, and know the prayer times.

As for the characteristics of a khateeb (preacher), they are of two types: innate characteristics, such as eloquent speech, clear articulation, steadfastness of heart, a resonant voice, and a clear tongue free from speech impediments. The acquired characteristics include practice and training, extensive knowledge, and good delivery. A successful khateeb is one who embodies sincerity, responsibility, and eagerness to guide people, whose words align with his actions, and whose outward appearance matches his inner self, and who exemplifies gentleness, kindness, and compassion towards people.
