Will disbelievers and polytheists from among the people of the fatrah be punished in their graves? What is the ruling concerning one who heard about Islam but knew nothing about it, and died upon disbelief? And is he considered among the People of the Book?

The definition of Ahl al-Fatra (people of the interval) has been previously explained, stating that they will be tested on the Day of Judgment, and that they will be questioned in their graves, with their answers being determined by Allah's foreknowledge of their ultimate destiny. As for someone who received the message of Islam through media but did not embrace it, they are judged as disbelievers in this world, and the rulings applicable to disbelievers apply to them; however, in the Afterlife, their matter is with Allah. The People of the Book are undoubtedly disbelievers.

Al-Suyuti divided Ahl al-Fatra into three categories: 1. Those who grasped monotheism through their insight: These are either those who did not adhere to a specific law (like Quss ibn Sa'ida) or those who followed a true law (like Tubba'). 2. Those who altered, changed, and committed polytheism: These will be punished for their disbelief. 3. Those who neither committed polytheism nor affirmed monotheism, nor entered into a specific law, nor devised a law for themselves: These are the true Ahl al-Fatra, and they will not be punished.

The hadiths that mention the punishment of Ahl al-Fatra are interpreted as referring to the second category among them.
