Your feeling of spiritual ailments is proof that your heart is alive, and knowing the illness is the first step towards its cure. Do not despair of God’s mercy, for sincere striving (mujahadah), self-accountability (muhasabah), and awareness of God (muraqabah) are the way to get rid of them. We advise reviewing the section on "Destructive Vices" from the abridgements of Ihya' 'Ulum al-Din, and Tahdheeb Madarij al-Salikin by Ibn al-Qayyim, and similar books by Ibn Taymiyyah and Ibn Rajab. The righteous predecessors got rid of them through striving, self-accountability, and awareness of God. Have a good opinion of your Lord and rely on Him for the rectification of your heart, for this is the greatest type of reliance, as Ibn al-Qayyim mentioned. Having a bad opinion of oneself is a good thing, but it should not reach the point of hindering self-rectification. Seek help through supplication, for when Almighty God perceives your sincerity, He will grant you your request.
