The answer

If the inquirer does not possess the nisab, which is equivalent to 85 grams of gold or 595 grams of silver, and a hawl (full lunar year) has not passed on it, then no zakat is due from them. However, if they did possess the nisab and a hawl passed on it, but they did not pay zakat, then they must pay zakat for the previous years. The majority of scholars are of the opinion that debt prevents the obligation of zakat on batinah (hidden) assets, such as trade goods. Thus, the debt is deducted from their value, and the remainder is subject to zakat if it reaches the nisab.
