What are the manners a traveler should observe, especially if his journey is for Hajj?

For those who wish to travel, especially for Hajj or battle (ghazw), there are recommended etiquettes, which include consulting people of experience and trustworthiness, seeking God's guidance (istikhara), repenting from sins, rectifying injustices, repaying debts, writing a will, and seeking the pleasure of one's parents. It is recommended that the travel expenses be lawful and abundant to comfort those in need, to learn how to perform the worship (like Hajj), to be accompanied by a righteous companion, and to bid farewell to family and friends with prayers.

Among the Sunnahs also are saying the supplication upon leaving the home and mounting, saying "Allahu Akbar" (God is Greatest) when ascending and "Subhanallah" (Glory be to God) when descending, and supplicating when approaching a village. The traveler should maintain purity and prayer, and utilize the many times when supplications are answered during travel.

It is disliked for travelers to separate when dismounting, and it is recommended to appoint a leader over them, and to hasten in returning to their families after accomplishing their need. Upon returning, it is Sunnah to say "Allahu Akbar" and the well-known supplication, and to start by visiting the mosque near the home and performing two rak'ahs of prayer. It is recommended to make "an-Naqi'ah," which is food prepared upon the traveler's arrival.

It is forbidden for a woman to travel without a mahram (unmarriageable kin) except out of necessity. As for the etiquettes of Hajj travel, among them is the obligatory: performing the pillars and avoiding the prohibitions, and the recommended: generosity with oneself, wealth, and status, serving others, enduring their harm, being kind to them, and completing the Hajj with verbal and physical etiquettes.
