Is Zakat obligatory on: a bank balance, a freehold apartment and a storeroom intended for trade, a private car, and a taxi on which a driver works for a wage?
You are not obligated to pay zakat on property intended for housing, rent, or personal use, based on the Prophet's (peace be upon him) saying: "A Muslim is not required to pay sadaqah (zakat) on his slave or his horse."
However, if something is intended for sale, zakat is obligatory on it. Its value should be assessed at the end of the year (hawl), and a quarter of a tenth (2.5%) of its value should be given.
Therefore, if the apartment and the store are intended for sale, zakat is obligatory on them every year. Their value should be assessed at the end of the year from their original purchase date, and 2.5% of their value should be given.
If they are intended for rent, there is no zakat on their value. Rather, zakat is on the income generated from them, provided it reaches the nisab (minimum threshold) and a year has passed over it.
Similarly, for a taxi, zakat is on its income, not on its value.
Zakat is also obligatory on money deposited in the bank if it reaches the nisab by itself or when combined with other funds, and a year has passed over it.
