Is it permissible to trim the hair on the neck, or is it considered part of the beard?

The hair growing on the throat is not part of the beard, and it is permissible to shave it. The definition of the beard, according to scholars, is the hair that grows on the cheeks and chin. Scholars have explicitly stated that hair on the neck is not part of the beard. Indeed, Al-Nawawi mentioned that Ahmad ibn Hanbal said, "There is no harm in shaving what is beneath his throat from his beard." And Ibn Abidin Al-Hanafi said, "One should not shave the hair of his throat, and from Abu Yusuf: there is no harm in it."
