The answer

Five narrations have been authentically reported from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, regarding the exemption of the beard (i'fa' al-lihya), and its meaning is to leave it as it is. A group of contemporary verifiers have concluded that the hair located in front of the ear (the sideburns) is attached to the beard, which is required by the linguistic meaning and the guidance of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him. It has been narrated from Imam Ahmad and some Malikis that it is permissible to take from them, and Al-Albani authenticated a narration from Ibn Abbas that mentions taking from the sideburns as part of "al-tafath" (personal grooming for Hajj/Umrah).
