Is the default in marriage polygyny or monogamy?

Marriage was legislated for chastity and procreation. If this purpose is achieved with one wife, polygyny remains desirable for whoever is able and capable of fulfilling its rights. However, if this purpose is not achieved with one wife, then it is desirable to marry a second, third, and fourth wife for whoever is able to be just and provide for them, according to the Almighty's saying: "Marry such women as seem good to you, two, three, or four; but if you fear that you will not be able to deal justly with them, then only one."
