What is Islam's view on the status of the intellect and its relationship with revelation, especially given the existence of opinions that elevate it to the point of equaling or preferring it over revelation, and others that diminish its importance to the point of denying its capacity to grasp the truth?

Allah created the intellect to ponder upon and understand revelation. It is not permissible to elevate the intellect to the level of revelation or beyond it, nor to deny the existence and value of the intellect. Both are from Allah, and there is no contradiction between them. When the premises of the intellect are sound and definitive, the conclusions will be definitive, and it is impossible for two definitive truths to contradict each other. If the texts of revelation are definitive, the intellect will not contradict them except with erroneous premises. And if the conclusions of the intellect are definitive, revelation will not contradict them unless revelation is not definitive in its authenticity or meaning. The definitive of the two rules over the probable, and whatever is beyond the scope of the intellect concerning matters of revelation, the believer believes in and submits to. The Islam of one who does not submit to and obey the texts of revelation is not affirmed, for "From Allah is the Message, from the Messenger is the Conveyance, and upon us is the Submission." The intellect with transmission is like an ordinary person who imitates a scholar striving for independent reasoning; the ordinary person can become a scholar, but a scholar cannot become a prophet. The intellect knows that the Messenger is infallible in his reporting from Allah, so submission to him and obedience to his command are obligatory. The intellect with revelation is like the light of the eye with the light of the sun; the eye cannot see except with the light of the sun, and the light of the intellect cannot be guided except by the "sun of Prophethood."
