Is someone who dies of an abdominal disease, such as cancer, a martyr in the sight of Allah?
The martyrs are five, as stated in the agreed-upon (muttafaq alayh) hadith: the one who dies by plague, the one who dies by a stomach disease, the drowned, the one who dies under a collapsed building, and the martyr in the way of Allah. These are martyrs in terms of their reward in the Hereafter, but not in terms of forgoing their ritual washing (ghusl) and funeral prayer.
The "mabṭūn" (one who dies by a stomach disease) is: one afflicted with a stomach illness, which is diarrhea. It is also said: it is one who has dropsy and abdominal distension. It is also said: it is one whose stomach complains. And it is also said: it is one who dies from any stomach disease whatsoever.
