Is Zakat obligatory on gold that was retrieved after the the engagement was broken?
The jewelry is one of two cases: either it is a pure gift, in which case it is not reclaimable after being taken possession of, or it is part of the Mahr (dowry), in which case it must be returned to the suitor if the engagement is annulled. If it was a gift and has been taken possession of, you have no right to reclaim it or pay on it. However, if it was part of the Mahr, then Zakat is obligatory upon you from the day you acquired its origin, provided it reached the (minimum threshold) and a whole year has passed; because the gold that is exempt from Zakat is that which is intended for adornment. What you possess of gold falls under the general evidence that dictates the obligation of Zakat on gold, and scholars have explicitly stated the obligation of Zakat on jewelry intended as Mahr.
