Is intercession (shafa'ah) granted before or after entering Hellfire?
Intercession on the Day of Judgment is a great mercy from Allah. The greatest of these is the intercession of the Prophet (peace be upon him) for deliverance from the horrors of the Standing and the acceleration of accountability, and this is exclusive to him. There are other intercessions by the Prophet (peace be upon him), including:
- Intercession for a people to enter Paradise without reckoning.
- Intercession for raising the ranks of the people of Paradise, as he (peace be upon him) said: "I am the first intercessor in Paradise."
- Intercession for disobedient monotheists: some of them deserved Hellfire, so he intercedes for them not to enter it, and those who entered it will be brought out from it.
It has been confirmed that believers will dispute concerning their brethren who entered Hellfire, and a great many people will be brought out from it through them. Then Allah Almighty will say: "The angels have interceded, and the prophets have interceded, and the believers have interceded. There remains none but the Most Merciful of those who show mercy." So He will grasp a handful from the Fire and bring out from it a people who never did any good deed whatsoever.
His types of intercession are six:
1. The Grand Intercession to relieve people from the horrors of the Standing.
2. Intercession for the people of Paradise to enter it.
3. Intercession for a group of disobedient people from his nation who deserved Hellfire, that they not enter it.
4. Intercession for the people of monotheism who entered Hellfire due to their sins.
5. Intercession for a group of the people of Paradise to increase their reward and raise their ranks.
6. Intercession for some disbelievers to lighten their torment, and this is exclusive to Abu Talib.
