Must a husband divorce his wife who drinks alcohol after attempts to reform her?
A husband is permitted to prevent his Christian wife from drinking alcohol because, even though it is permissible in her religion, it is not something she is commanded to do. Therefore, the husband has the right to prevent her from it. Al-Bujairimi, a Shafi'i scholar, stated that a Christian wife is like a Muslim wife concerning marital rights, and the husband may compel her to abandon consumption of what is vile, such as intoxicants. If she refuses, he should treat her as a disobedient wife (nashiz). If this approach does not work with her, then he should divorce her.
