Is eating to gain weight or maintain it considered extravagance, especially when eating more than needed or more than three meals a day? And does preparing and consuming various desserts fall under extravagance and attachment to worldly pleasures? And what is one obligated to do in this case?
Islam encourages moderation in worldly matters and asceticism. It warns against excessive eating and drinking. Despite this, it commands eating and drinking in moderation, without excess, as the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "No human ever filled a vessel worse than his stomach. A few morsels are sufficient to keep his back straight. But if he must eat more, then a third for his food, a third for his drink, and a third for his breath." And Allah Almighty said: {And eat and drink, but be not excessive. Indeed, He likes not those who commit excess.}
Accordingly, eating beyond satiety is disliked by the majority of scholars, and it becomes forbidden if it leads to harm to oneself or indigestion. As for making refreshments and sweets, the general rule is permissibility, unless it exceeds the need, in which case it falls under forbidden extravagance.
