What is the ruling on a trust (amanah) that is difficult to return to its owners due to their travel?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

Whoever holds a trust must preserve and safeguard it and return it to its rightful owners, as Allah Almighty says: (Indeed, Allah commands you to render trusts to whom they are due), and as the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Render the trust to the one who entrusted you, and do not betray the one who betrays you." Betraying a trust is one of the signs of hypocrisy. Therefore, this trust must be returned to its owners, because the difficulty of reaching them does not invalidate their right to it. You must contact them by any possible means, or wait for their return from travel to receive their trust in full.
