What is the written formula for customary, civil, and Sharia marriage contracts?
The conditions for a valid marriage (Nikah), without which it is impermissible, include the صيغة (formula of offer and acceptance), which is every word that necessitates the offer from the woman's guardian and the acceptance from the husband. The offer (الإيجاب) is for the guardian to say: "I marry you to so-and-so" or "I give you so-and-so in marriage." The acceptance (القبول) is for the husband to say: "I accept her marriage," or "I accept her matrimony," or "I consent to her marriage." As for 'Urfi marriage, it refers to two forms: one is valid and the other is invalid. Civil marriage is what takes place in court with the presence of two witnesses. Any contract that does not meet the necessary Shariah conditions is null and void.
