How do I reconcile my love for fame with the sincerity of my intention to God?

Love of prominence and seeking fame contradict sincerity (ikhlas). The Salaf (pious predecessors) warned against this, for sincerity cannot coexist in the heart with love of praise and commendation, or coveting what people possess. Whoever desires sincerity must slaughter greed with the knife of despair and be ascetic regarding praise and commendation. This is made easy for him by his knowledge that the treasures of all that is coveted are in the hand of Allah alone, and that Allah alone is He whose praise benefits and adorns, and whose condemnation harms and disgraces. As for one who seeks leadership to benefit people, not for ostentation, this is commendable. The sincere person is one who is not affected by people's praise or blame, because he knows that benefit and harm are in the hand of Allah.
