Am I obligated to obey my parents in refusing to marry a religious young man because he is currently unemployed, even though I am financially well-off and can support him financially after marriage?

If a young man has strong religious commitment and good character, he possesses the most important qualities desired by every Muslim woman seeking marriage. This is because it is hoped that one will live a happy marital life with such a person. The Chosen One (peace and blessings be upon him) guided his nation by saying: "If there comes to you one whose religion and character you approve, then marry him. If you do not do so, there will be tribulation on earth and widespread corruption."

Try to convince your family that a lack of wealth is not a defect as long as he is capable of earning. Allah has promised wealth to poor married couples, saying: "And marry the unmarried among you and the righteous among your male slaves and female slaves. If they should be poor, Allah will enrich them from His bounty. And Allah is all-Encompassing and Knowing."

If they agree, then praise your Lord. If they refuse, you may refer the matter to the Shariah judge to marry you. And beware of pursuing any path to marriage other than what has been mentioned.
