What is meant by "manliness/chivalry" (al-murūʾah)?

Al-Ahnaf ibn Qays defined muru'ah (chivalry/manliness) through multiple definitions, among them: not doing in secret what one would be ashamed to do openly, keeping secrets and avoiding evil, and piety and endurance. He also defined it as patience with what angers until one is asked to desist, chastity in religion, patience in calamities, forbearance when angry, forgiveness when able, and honoring one's parents.
