What is the reason a young man feels the desire to break things or harm himself and his mother, and what should he do about it?
One must hasten to treat anxiety by turning to Allah the Almighty, for supplication is a means by which the distressed are answered and it removes anxiety. Allah the Almighty said: {Is not He Who responds to the distressed one, when he calls on Him?} and {And your Lord says: "Call upon Me; I will respond to you."} Prayer is a great aid in this regard, for Allah the Almighty said: {And seek help through patience and prayer}. And the Prophet (peace be upon him) used to say: "O Bilal, establish the prayer, and relieve us with it."
Frequent remembrance of Allah is a cause for guiding the soul and tranquilizing the heart, for {Verily, in the remembrance of Allah do hearts find rest}. Furthermore, sitting with the righteous and attending circles of knowledge and Qur'an are encompassed by angels and mercy descends upon them. Indeed, the cause of distress and hardship is turning away from the remembrance of Allah, as Allah the Almighty said: {But whoever turns away from My remembrance - indeed, he will have a difficult life}.
We advise the questioner to maintain a constant connection with Allah the Almighty and to hold fast to His rope, for {And whoever holds fast to Allah has certainly been guided to a straight path}. And one must control oneself with one's mother and people in general to avoid disobeying parents.
